The reaction time test measures yours in about fifteen seconds, and unlike your polling rate or your monitor, this number answers to training.

That is the hook and the honest limit in one. Reflex scores respond to practice, sleep and setup, and they also harden with age in ways no peripheral purchase fixes. Knowing your baseline is the start of improving it.

How the reaction time test works

The test box starts red. Wait, and at a random moment between 1.2 and 4 seconds it flips to green, and you click the instant you see it. The engine stamps the colour change and your pointerdown with performance.now() and reports the difference in milliseconds. Click during the red and the trial logs a false start, because a reaction measured before the stimulus is a guess. Guessers are not fast, they are lucky.

Five trials make a session. The result card shows every attempt with your best click highlighted. The best three average is the fairer headline, since one lucky 180ms says less about you than three solid hits around 220ms. A ranking label places your average on the scale, from elite under 200ms to needs practice over 400ms. Session history shows whether you warmed up or faded.

What a good score looks like

Bands from the aggregated public data put the median near 273ms. Fast territory is 200 to 250ms, and average is 250 to 300ms. Trained esports players sit between 150 and 200ms on visual tests, and scores under 150ms usually mean the click anticipated the flip, which the false start filter exists to catch. Over 400ms is slow, and consistently over 450ms on a healthy setup is worth discussing with a doctor rather than a mouse reviewer.

Context bends the bands. Fatigue and time of day move a real reflex by 20 to 40ms. So does a skipped warm up, and so does background load on the machine. Input hardware matters too, since a click spends time in the chain measured by the mouse latency test. A 125Hz office mouse on a slow panel can add over 20ms to an otherwise identical nervous system. Practical upshot for gamers, sound cues are the cheat code. Footstep audio in a shooter arrives in the brain before the visual peek resolves, which is why pros play with quality audio. Your monitor adds time you cannot train away

The display sits between the stimulus and your retina, and its refresh interval is dead time. A 60Hz panel paints a new frame every 16.7ms, so the green flash waits that long before existing. A 144Hz panel paints every 6.9ms, and at 240Hz the wait is 4.2ms. The same nervous system, tested on the same mouse, reads several milliseconds faster on the faster panel, and none of that improvement came from you.

This is why reaction scores are only comparable within a setup. Your 250ms on a 60Hz laptop and your friend's 235ms on a 240Hz monitor are the same reflex to within rounding. Beat your own baseline on your own rig, and treat cross rig comparisons as conversation rather than data. The training advice holds regardless. Sleep on schedule, warm up before ranked, and look at the stimulus rather than the crosshair of your expectations.
