Windows ships its double click threshold at 500 milliseconds by default. Click twice inside that window and the system reads one double click, click outside it and you get two singles. Most people never think about the number until their mouse starts doubling on single presses, and then it is all they think about. The double click test exists to turn that feeling into a measurement before it costs you a game or a file drag gone wrong.

The complaint is common and the cause is usually hardware. Logging every click pair with millisecond timestamps settles whether the switch is dying or the software is misbehaving. It settles it in under a minute.

How the test works

Click rapidly for the test duration. The engine time stamps every pointerdown with performance.now() and groups clicks into pairs. A pair registers as a double click when both presses land inside a 400ms window. That window sits deliberately close to the 500ms system default. It is tight enough to catch real pairs and loose enough to accept a human rhythm.

Two figures come back. Pairs per second shows how many clean pairs you produce, which is a speed metric on a healthy mouse. The pair ratio, clean pairs against total clicks, is the diagnostic one. A healthy switch converts nearly every rapid pair you throw at it. A failing one splits pairs into singles, because the second press gets swallowed or the debounce logic eats one of the two signals.

Why healthy mice start doubling

The switch under your button is the usual suspect. Most gaming mice use Omron mechanical switches, the D2FC series, rated for 20 million clicks, with 50 million rated variants in premium models. Rating is not immortality. Spring fatigue and contact oxidation develop with age and dust. The contact starts bouncing on press, which the mouse firmware reads as two presses.

Some batches are simply bad. Well documented waves of double firing complaints hit popular models across brands. Owners' forums fill with the same story, a mouse months old doubling on singles. Gamers feel it first because games punish it instantly. In Minecraft a stray double breaks your block placement rhythm, and in a shooter it wastes a bolt action's cycle. On the desktop it opens folders twice and drags files you merely selected, which is how most people discover the fault.

Reading your pair rate

Interpretation takes two passes. First, your own baseline. Pair speed is trainable, and practiced clickers using two fingers produce more pairs than single finger users, the same way mouse CPS splits by technique. Second, the failure signature, which is irregular regardless of skill. A dying switch pairs beautifully for ten clicks, then drops three pairs in a row, then recovers. Consistency collapsing in bursts points at hardware. Slow but steady pairs point at your technique, which practice fixes and money cannot.

Cold matters more than people expect. A mouse that doubles on a winter morning and behaves by noon is showing contact resistance rising in the cold. That pattern confirms the switch diagnosis better than any single reading. Log a few sessions across a day before condemning or clearing the hardware.

Can a failing switch be fixed

Ranked honestly. Warranty first, since double firing faults inside coverage get the mouse replaced, and manufacturers know the failure mode well. Cleaning second, since a blast of contact friendly electronics cleaner around the switch sometimes buys months, with the mouse unplugged and the shell open. Soldering last. The switches cost about a dollar each. Swapping one means opening the shell and desoldering the old Omron before the replacement goes in, which is real work if you have never held an iron.

Debounce tuning sits outside the mouse for most people, since adjustable debounce lives in the configuration software of only some brands. Where it exists, raising debounce a few milliseconds masks doubles at the cost of click latency, the same trade keyboard firmware makes with chatter. The switch is still dying underneath.

In rhythm games and Minecraft style PvP it decides exchanges, since clean fast pairs drive block placement and tapping patterns. In shooters single press precision wins, so a switch that fires doubles hurts you there far more than slow pairs do.
