WASD won by 1998. Quake arrived in 1996 with arrow key defaults, and Dennis "Thresh" Fong popularised the cluster in competitive play. Half-Life shipped two years later with WASD bound as standard, which ended the argument for everyone after. The four keys have carried PC movement for nearly three decades. The WASD test is the first tool on this site that grades them as a unit, speed and accuracy together, the way games use them.
That is the gap this test fills. A keyboard CPS test scores one key under sprint conditions. Movement is a different job, four keys under prompts, with accuracy mattering as much as raw hits. A missed D in a strafe duel is a lost duel.
Prompts appear one at a time, a letter on screen, and you press it. The engine tracks keydown events for the WASD cluster only, stamps each with performance.now() and grades the response. Correct presses score hits, wrong keys score misses. The session builds a keys per second figure alongside your accuracy ratio. Arrow keys never register in this mode, since the test measures the left hand cluster by design.
The score is reaction and accuracy braided together. A fast player at 95 percent accuracy outperforms a faster one at 80, because in real movement a wrong key is worse than a late one. It moves you the wrong way. The result panel shows hits, misses and the derived rate so you can see which half of your game is weak. Fast and sloppy is a rhythm problem. Slow and accurate is a reaction problem, and the two have different fixes.
The layout predates its victory by years. Early FPS players on Doom and Quake used arrows, and the mouse was optional. Thresh, the first famous esports champion, won the 1997 Red Annihilation Quake tournament on a config with movement on the left hand. That put strafing fingers near the emerging mouse hand's modifiers and freed the arrow cluster entirely. Id Software noticed. Half-Life shipped WASD as default in 1998, and within a console generation the cluster was hardwired into PC gaming's muscle memory.
Ergonomics explains why it stuck. The left hand sits on the cluster with the palm resting, and each finger gets a key while the thumb lands on space for jump. Shift and Control sit one row out for sprint and crouch. Q and E fall next to the ring finger for ability keys, and the number row stacks weapons above. No alternative layout packs as many reachable binds around a movement core, which is why ESDF and its kin stay niche.
In Counter-Strike, movement accuracy has a rule, you shoot straightest when stopped. Stopping has a technique. Tapping the opposite movement key cancels velocity faster than releasing and waiting for friction. An A strafe into a D tap stops you in a frame or two instead of a dozen. Counter-strafing is that tap, and it separates ranks more cleanly than aim does in the middle brackets.
The WASD test trains the underlying skill, which is instant, accurate, opposite direction keying. Your keys per second score reflects how fast you can invert direction. Your miss count reflects how often the panic press lands on a neighbour key. Players who counter-strafe cleanly read high accuracy at speed here, and players whose taps stutter read a wall of misses. Valorant inherits the same mechanic with slightly softer numbers, so the training transfers.
Alternatives exist and their fans are loyal. ESDF shifts the cluster one key right, which unlocks the left side of the board for extra binds. The bumps on the F key then work as a homing anchor. The cost is a generation of muscle memory and game defaults that assume WASD. Arrow configs serve left handed mouse users mirrored on the numpad side, and some accessibility setups remap movement onto a gamepad stick. None of this changes what the test measures, since prompt accuracy on any four keys is the same skill wearing different letters.
Wear matters whichever cluster you use. W is among the most pressed keys in gaming, sometimes held for entire matches, and double input faults show up there first. If prompts register double or movement stutters in game, run the keyboard chatter test on the suspect keys. If held combinations drop inputs entirely, the NKRO test maps the ceiling that cheap boards hit.

History and geometry. The cluster sat next to the mouse hand's modifiers once mouse look arrived, and Half-Life defaulted to it in 1998. Thirty years of defaults built the muscle memory. Arrow configs exist for left handed players, and the test ignores them by design.
